Global business aviation activity hit a new post-March high in the last few days, averaging 11,500 sectors a day, according to WINGX`s weekly Global Market Tracker published today. In the last 6 months, the sector has lost 844K sectors compared to the same period of 2019, a 37% drop in operations.

In North America, March, April, and May all broke Argus's previous all-time record low for flight activity—February 2009, the bottom of the Great Recession. April 2020, the nadir, registered 47,771 flights, compared with more than 250,000 in April 2019. Charter was down 67 percent, private flights were off 72 percent, and fractional flight hours declined 80 percent. Europe, already in a prolonged bizav slump, saw year-over-year activity drop more than 70 percent in April as lockdowns took hold, and remain down more than 60 percent in May. In early June, business aviation activity was 49 percent lower year over year in North America and 51 percent globally, according to Hamburg, Germany–based WingX.

Business Aviation recovery strongest in Europe: WINGX said, “Over the last 30 days, through 11th August, global business aviation activity has trailed last year by 17%, with Europe the most resilient region, flights down by only 5%. In the first 10 days of August, European bizav activity showing a 0.1% increase in sectors flown compared to August 2019.”

According to WingX, business aviation is coming back the strongest in Europe, with July-August trends up to 89% of comparative 2019 activity. Central Europe activity is seeing the highest levels of recovery. In the U.S., for the first time since the pandemic struck, Florida is no longer the busiest state. Its year-over-year growth trend, resilient in June and July, was close to flat in August, WingX says. Colorado and Arizona appear to be popular as getaway destinations, with flight hours trending at least 5% above July and August 2019 levels. East Coast states, such as New York and New Jersey, are about 30% behind normal activity.
